During a Special Council Presentation on May 21, 2014, Homestead Police Captain Marie Kent acknowledged the valiant efforts and courage demonstrated by fellow police officer Elvis Ackerman who recently saved a resident’s life by performing CPR.
Officer Ackerman had been a reserve officer since 2004, upgrading to full-time status in 2006. His role as an FTO (Field Training Officer) requires patience and understanding as he is tasked with training new recruits. Officer Ackerman began his journey in law enforcement over 25 years ago as a Police Explorer. This is the second time he has been so acknowledged as Officer of the Month.
In addition, Officer Ackerman was awarded a Life Saving Award for an incident that occurred back in March 2014. Officer Ackerman was dispatched to the home of an elderly female who was having trouble breathing and, eventually, lost consciousness. After not finding a pulse, Officer Ackerman proceeded to administer CPR until paramedics arrived to relieve him. The victim was transported to the ER where she regained consciousness and stabilized after the incident.
“Through your rapid response, constant vigilance and strict adherence to training, we commend you for your courageous efforts, heroism and dedication to the community and your profession,” added Mayor Jeff Porter when presenting the awards.
