[ARCHIVED] Homestead Community Center Artists Display Their Work

Vice Mayor Stephen Shelley took time during May’s Special Council Presentations to recognize the talent of the artists currently on display in the halls of the William F. Dickinson Community Center as part of his Artist in the Spotlight program.

“The work you see hanging in the Community Center represents a collaboration between the artists currently taking the free art classes that are being offered here for the benefit of the community,” said Vice Mayor Shelley, who created the Artist in the Spotlight program three years ago. “This particular showing is unique in that it runs the gamut of different mediums being used which we’ve never done before. It’s a beautiful thing how this all came together with a community of artists in all skill levels getting a chance to be seen.”

The art classes have been offered over the last four years and serve as much as a social meeting place as an academy for learning.

“We are all really tickled to have the opportunity to show our artistic output over the years and we can’t thank the Vice Mayor enough,” said Melody Speegle, one of the participating artists. “It’s not often you get to see the collected works of the very accomplished and the promising work of those that have very little experience but more than enough passion.”

Among the other participating artists are Thelma Tucker, Dennis Ross, Mary Lou Hampton, Clinton Solomon, Isabel Maytan and Quillian Minott. The exhibit will be open to the public in the Community Center until the end of June.
