In celebration of Women’s History Month, Councilwoman Patricia Fairclough gathered some of the City of Homestead’s own luminaries to pay them homage for their leadership and
distinguished service to the community.
“I rise today to recognize, simply put, some women who really ‘rock!’ Today I would like to recognize some ordinary women who achieve extraordinary things,” said Councilwoman Fairclough during the special presentation at the April Homestead City Council meeting. “These women hail from a diverse area of disciplines, they consistently perform at a very high level of commitment but, most importantly, they lead from the heart. I did not want the good work they do every day to go unnoticed so, with that, I would like to invite these special ladies to join me at the podium.”
The women recognized at the event were local author Charlie Hudson, Director of Homestead Soup Kitchen and former Florida City Councilwoman Juanita Smith, Executive Director of WeCare Kametra Driver, Executive Director of the Mexican-American Council Maria Garza, Overseeing Principal for Palm Glades Charter School, Everglades Preparatory Academy and Charter School at Waterstone Melissa Aguilar, Miami-Dade County Public Schools 2015 Francisco R. Walker Teacher of the Year Finalist Myrna Betancourt, Executive Director of the Homestead/Florida City Chamber of Commerce Rosa Brito, Homestead Old Town Hall Museum Director and former City of Homestead Vice-Mayor Ruth Campbell, First Female Pastor of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church Pastor Sabrina Pope, one of the top producers for Keyes Realty Susan Newman, Event Chair Homestead Relay for Life Teri Weinstein, Principal at Somerset Academy Dr. Cristina Cruz-Ortiz, Councilwoman Judy Waldman and City of Homestead Assistant City Manager Allyson Love.
This is Councilwoman Patricia Fairclough’s second Women’s History Month recognition this year. During the March City Council meeting, she recognized the hard working members of the Homestead Women’s Club, which recently celebrated its centennial.
