On Saturday, April 26, multitudes of bicycle and outdoors enthusiasts will be congregating at the Homestead-Miami Speedway to take part in the 5th Annual Biscayne-Everglades Greenway Bike Festival. The ride kicks off at 9:30 am and it stretches some 10.25 miles as it loops around to Biscayne National Park and back to the Speedway. The trail, known as the Biscayne-Everglades Greenway, is a small portion of a larger 42-mile loop that intends to connect both Biscayne National and Everglades National Parks offering points of interests along the way. The Greenway project is the vision of City of Homestead Councilwoman Judy Waldman, which seeks to offer a safe and scenic route to the parks without concern for vehicular traffic. The Biscayne-Everglades Greenway is a collaboration among AIA Miami, the Miami-Dade County Park and Recreation Department, Biscayne and Everglades National Parks, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Office of Greenways and Trails, the City of Homestead and the NPS Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program, among many others.
Upon return to the Speedway, riders and participants can enjoy live music offerings, libations and food provided by mobile food trucks and Homestead Relay for Life and a host of different vendors. In addition, there will be an on-site bike mechanic to assist riders should the need arise. Representatives of the University of Miami’s BikeSafe Program will also be present and youngsters can let their creativity flourish by taking part in a bike painting activity. The festival is scheduled to begin at 11:30am and last until 2:00pm. For cyclists in need of a bike, please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 305-224-4570. Rental bikes must be reserved no later than Thursday, April 24.
