[ARCHIVED] Councilman Maldonado Honors Education Committee Members

After four years of dedicated work and accomplishments in Homestead education, Councilman Elvis Maldonado finished his term as Liaison to the Education Committee by honoring the devoted and hard working members of the committee.

The Homestead Education Committee, comprised of educators, business leaders and members of local non-profit entities, was organized to provide solutions to problems that serve as obstacles to the education process. This is a key committee as the issues that arise can be complex and require a high level of commitment above and beyond the responsibilities the members already have with their own careers. As such, Councilman Maldonado honored the group for their selfless pursuit of academic excellence during his term.

“How quickly four years passes,” he went on to say. “I’m looking at my colleagues on the Education Committee and I remember the day they submitted their applications, the first day we met and the many talks we had about the issues that were important to us. As a liason, I was tasked with improving the quality of education here in Homestead. I’ve always believed that if Homestead is going to be a great city then education needs to be the foundation upon which it is built.”

Before calling his committee members up to receive their awards, the councilman said, “This is in recognition of your four years of outstanding service and dedication to the City of Homestead. Thank you for your exemplary leadership and commitment to the enhancement of education in the community. The City of Homestead salutes you!”

Those that were honored were: Carlos Salgado, Founder & Executive Director of enFamilia Inc., Alicia Corrales, Lead Teacher at Air Base Elementary, Yamberli Cruz, Lead Teacher at South Dade Middle School, Cecilia Magrath – Support Specialist at the Educational Transformation Office Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Michael Meikle, President of Fast Action Inc. (not present), Dr. Jim Tranthem, Community School Director and Willie Wamble, Teacher at Campbell Middle School.

Councilwoman Patricia Fairclough will now assume the leadership of the Education Committee going forward.
