During a special presentation at the November 20 City Council meeting, Councilwoman Patricia Fairclough had the distinction of welcoming the newest members the civic group she has been leading for over a year: the Mayor’s Youth Council. The Youth Council seeks the best and brightest applicants in grades 8-12 that reside in the City of Homestead. The students learn valuable skills, as a supplement to their academic course load, intended to improve communications skills and to cultivate volunteerism and civic participation.
The selection process is often very meticulous. “It was very difficult to select the new members due to such a high volume of applicants,” said Councilwoman Fairclough during the swearing-in ceremony, “Ultimately, we arrived at our decision and, as such, we’d like to welcome the newest members of our family.”
Mayor Jeff Porter then officially swore in the five honorees: Aldyn McGrath Edwards, Brittany Hernandez, Claudia Verdecia, Kristyn Silver and Marco Ocampo.
“These young people present here today represent some of the best young minds in our city,” Councilwoman Fairclough went on to say.” Thanks to the Mayor’s Youth Council, they are now poised to execute their office with the character and dignity that will define them throughout their lives.”
