Now in its third successful year of recognizing exceptional, homegrown talent, Vice Mayor Stephen R. Shelley’s Artist in the Spotlight program continues to make strides. During a Council Meeting on November 20, a special acknowledgement was presented to Jesus Marquez, Homestead resident and the most recent artist given the opportunity to show his work to the public through this program.
Mr. Marquez, a Homestead City employee working in the Solid Waste Department, holds an Associate of Art degree from Miami Dade College with continued studies in the field at Florida International University. Affectionately nicknamed “Ink” for his many tattoos and tendency to employ techniques found in urban art forms such as graffiti, Mr. Marquez eagerly spoke of the three oil paintings that are the subject of his exhibit.
“It’s a representation of my influences from Greek Mythology and the beauty I find in everyday life.” Choosing brilliantly-colored orchids as his muse, each of the three pieces were inspired by his wife, grandmother and a strong belief in family. He closed his time at the podium with the heartfelt sentiments of a man truly grateful for his opportunity to shine. “I want to say thank you to Vice Mayor Shelley because there are very few places where local artists can showcase their work, especially those with little to no exposure. I hope to see this program continue to flourish.”
Jesus Marquez’s first solo show entitled “Chasing Antheia: Blooms In The Void” can be viewed through Vice Mayor Shelley’s Artist in the Spotlight Program at ArtSouth during Second Saturdays in November and December 2013 and through December 31at the Homestead Historic Town Hall Museum.
