[ARCHIVED] Councilwoman Patricia Fairclough-McCormick Recognizes Sizzling Summer Reading Challenge winners

The Winners of the Sizzling Summer Reading Challenge were recognized by Councilwoman Patricia Fairclough-McCormick during a special presentation of the August City of Homestead Council Meeting for their creative entries and dedication to continuing their education during the summer months.

“There is nothing more important during the summer months than to keep students engaged in academics and that was the idea behind the Sizzling Summer Reading Challenge,” said Councilwoman Fairclough-McCormick, Council Liaison to the Mayor’s Youth Council. “I am proud to recognize the winners for not only continuing to read during the summer but for submitting entries with so much style and substance.”

The Sizzling Summer Reading Challenge was an initiative started by the Mayor’s Youth Council and Councilwoman Fairclough-McCormick to encourage students to read during the summer months. Councilwoman Fairclough McCormick, a long-time educator, who currently serves as Assistant Principal at Pine Lake Elementary personally created the reading assignments to reflect the coming school year teaching standards and assessments. All participants and winners received uniforms and school supplies for taking part in the challenge and Councilwoman Fairclough-McCormick awarded the following three students with certificates for their standout entries. Jon Burgess of Air Base Elementary, 2nd grade received a certificate for his entry and for donating the uniforms he received, Lorelei Hernandez of Keys Gate Charter School, 8th grade, and Ryan Hernandez of Keys Gate Charter School 5th grade.
