On Friday, July 12, Homestead-Miami Speedway and the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners hosted a street co-designation ceremony in honor of Homestead-Miami Speedway founder Mr. Ralph Sanchez naming a portion of SW 137 Avenue between US1 and Palm Drive Street as “Ralph Sanchez Speedway Boulevard.”
City of Homestead Councilwoman Patricia Fairclough-McCormick, Councilman Elvis R. Maldonado, Councilman Jimmie L. Williams, III, and Councilman Stephen R. Shelley were present during this very moving ceremony. Also present were Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners Vice-Chair Linda Bell, Commissioner Dennis C. Moss, Miami Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez, as well as members of Mr. Ralph Sanchez family.
Ralph Sanchez, who recently passed away, was the founder of the Homestead-Miami Speedway and established Miami Dade County as one of the premier destinations in auto racing by bringing NASCAR and Grand Prix races to this area. He is credited with establishing this area as one of the premier destination in auto racing. The co-designation of the avenue honors Mr. Ralph Sanchez, in memoriam, for his invaluable contribution to economic development in Miami-Dade County.
