The City of Homestead and Miami Dade College (MDC) broke ground to mark the start of the construction of the much anticipated MDC Student Success Center. The groundbreaking took place at the building grounds on Tuesday, October 19th, 2021. The four-story, 60,000-square-foot Student Success Center will serve as a multipurpose hub aimed at better serving the community.
“Homestead is a place of limitless possibilities,” remarked Homestead Campus Student Government Association President Jazmin Laughlin as she reflected on the past and future students of MDC Homestead. The monumental groundbreaking ceremony also included remarks from Homestead Mayor Steven D. Losner, MDC’s President Madeline Pumariega, MDC Homestead Campus President Dr.Oscar Loynaz, and other key stakeholders.
The Student Success Center will mimic the design of City Hall to create a true gateway to the campus and connection with Downtown Homestead. The center will feature an Entrepreneurial Center that will address the City of Homestead’s community and workforce development needs. It will also include the Dean of Student Services office, campus bookstore, classrooms, computer labs, and conference center with an art gallery that will showcase student and community art exhibitions. The building will further advance the vision to breathe new life into Downtown Homestead by bringing the Homestead Campus’s more than 15,000 students closer to the business community in the heart of the city. The project is set to complete January 2023.
The MDC Student Success Center is part of an overall vision to revitalize Downtown Homestead. Other completed projects include the City Hall, Police Headquarters, Seminole Theatre, Cybrarium, and Homestead Station transit and entertainment center. The expansion of the City’s Losner Park is also currently underway. Learn more at www.discoverdowntownhomestead.com.
