Bulky Waste & Illegal Dumping
Over the past several weeks, Homestead Public Services (HPS) Sanitation has seen a large increase in bulky waste volume and illegal dumping. HPS Sanitation Staff has been working diligently to maintain a consistent pick-up schedule even with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but due the volume of bulky waste, has been unable to complete the routes as scheduled.
HPS is reminding communities of the need to work together to educate residents and ensure your community is in compliance. The guidelines for bulky waste are as follows:
- Large bulky items and yard waste may be placed at the designated location one day prior to the scheduled pickup date.
- Appliances allowed: stoves, refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, dryers, water heaters, and air conditioners. Doors must be removed from refrigerators and freezers.
- Yard waste includes grass, leaves, trees, and shrubbery cuttings. Tree limbs and logs must be less than four inches in diameter and stumps must be less than fifteen inches in diameter and less than fifty pounds in weight.
- The following items MUST NOT be included in Bulky Waste Pickups: dirt, sod, liquids, rocks, concrete, paints, toxic or flammable materials, construction debris, dead animals, or roofing materials.
The City of Homestead Police Department’s Code Compliance Division will be conducting neighborhood sweeps to issue bulky waste violations and implementing surveillance operations to apprehend illegal dumpers. To this end, HPS asks that anyone who witnesses illegal dumping report it to Homestead Police immediately by calling 305-247-1535.
Loose or un-bagged waste in regular trash pickups creates unsightly litter and poses a health and environmental hazard to HPS Staff, our customers, and your residents. For these reasons, HPS ask for community assistance in educating residents on this point.
At HPS Sanitation, we pride ourselves on treating you as not just a customer, but as a neighbor, and that is why we have consistently offered the highest number of regularly bulky waste pickups in Miami-Dade County for a lower fee than other areas where pickups are provided only twice a year. We ask for your assistance in helping us help you.
