[ARCHIVED] Caryl Alarcon’s Exhibit Presented by Councilman Stephen R. Shelley

Councilman Stephen R. Shelley announced the new location for the Art in the Chamber program while presenting local artist Caryl Alarcon’s exhibit “Hojas y Petalos” during a special presentation of the April 17 Homestead City Council meeting.

“This exhibit brings the beautiful foliage of the City of Homestead to canvas,” said Councilman Shelley. “I am proud to recognize Caryl Alarcon’s work and exited to see it displayed as the first exhibit for the Art in the Chamber Program at the Historic Town Hall Museum.”

“I was inspired by the natural beauty found right here in the neighborhoods of the City of Homestead,” said Ms. Alarcon “I want to thank Councilman Shelley for highlighting my work and I am honored to be the first artist in the new location for the Art in the Chamber Program.”

Caryl Alarcon resides in Homestead and has been working as a Geographer for the National Park Service in Everglades National Park for the last six years. Her work experience in this area includes working for the Nature Conservancy/Eastern Caribbean Program in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, the USDA Forest Service, International Institute of Tropical Forestry in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, The Nature Conservancy, Nebraska Program, and the United States Peace Corps. She has a Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs and a Master of Arts in Geography from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Omaha, NE. She has also Studied Art History at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Lincoln, NE, and studied Watercolors under Artist Dottie Greene at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens, Miami, Florida in 2009. She has studied drawing with Artist Alen Avila in Casa Lamm, Mexico City, Mexico in 2009. She has also studied Oil Painting with Artist Guadalupe Fuentes Del Camp in Mexico City, Mexico from 2005-2007, and with Artist William Vega in Art South, Homestead, FL from 2007-2008. She has also studied Wheel-thrown Pottery with Artist Dirk Gillespie, Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha, NE in 1999.

Art in the Chamber is a program created by Councilman Shelley to highlight local artists and their work as well as bring education and culture to the community. The Art in the Chamber program is now at the new location of the Historic Town Hall Museum at 41 North Krome Avenue Homestead, Florida 33030. “Hojas y Petalos” will be on display starting May 1, 2013.
