[ARCHIVED] Military Appreciation Essay and Art Student Contest Offer Cash Prizes

The Homestead/Florida City Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a Military Appreciation Art and Essay Contest on the meaning of freedom and honoring our Military. The art work and essays will be exhibited at the Military Appreciation Day Event on Saturday, May 25th from 3 to 9 pm at Losner Park, 104 N. Krome Avenue. Contest winners will also be announced the day of the event.

The Essay Contest invites Middle School (6-8 grade) and Senior High School (9-12 grade) students to write a 500-word-limit essay about what freedom and honoring service means. The Art Contest, open for four age groups, Elementary (K-2), Elementary (3-5 grade), Middle School (6-8 grade) and Senior High School (9-12 grade), invites students to design a Memorial Day art work about what freedom and honoring service means. Art submissions may be in any artistic medium (paint, drawing, photography, sculpture, collage, etc.).

Each category’s age group will receive cash prizes as follows: $100 for First Place, $50 for Second Place and $25 for third place. Deadline for entries is May 15. Contest entries must be delivered or mailed to the Greater Homestead / Florida City Chamber of Commerce 455 North Homestead Blvd. Homestead, FL to the attention of: Executive Director Rosa Brito. Essay entries may be emailed to: rbrito@chamberinaction.com. All submissions must include student name, school, grade, address, and phone on the submission. Winners will be announced at the Military Appreciation Day event, where all contest entries will be exhibited. The event will include live music, military displays and demonstrations, food trucks, vendors, and bounce houses. The event, which is organized by The City of Homestead in partnership with the Military Affairs Committee, the Homestead Air Reserve Base and the Homestead/Florida City Chamber of Commerce, will offer to Military ID holders free $10-vouchers redeemable for food at the event, additionally those wearing a Military Uniform will be entered for free into a $500-valued prize raffle.
