Councilwoman Fairclough Honors School for Advanced Studies Homestead

Fairclough SAS Proclamation

At the May 29th Special Presentations, Councilwoman Patricia Fairclough announced that the School for Advanced Studies (SAS) in Homestead was the #1 high school in Miami-Dade County. She invited Dr. Omar Monteagudo, SAS principal, to join her at the front of the Council Chambers to celebrate the significance and the excitement of the school’s achievement.

Opening her presentation, Councilwoman Fairclough said to Monteagudo, “In the City of Homestead, we recognize the value of having high-performing schools in our community and so we’re grateful for your leadership and everything you’ve done for the School for Advanced Studies to put your school on the map, and to also to put our city on the map.”

The School for Advanced Studies (SAS) is a nationally recognized collegiate high school of excellence, a combined effort of Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) and Miami Dade College (MDC). Students attending SAS complete their last two years of high school while attending MDC.

“I am honored to present this proclamation to you and the SAS family for being the #1 school in Miami-Dade County, the #2 school in the state of Florida and the #26 school in the United States,” Councilwoman Fairclough continued, congratulating SAS for 30 years of educational excellence and proclaiming May 29th as Homestead School for Advanced Studies Day.

Dr. Monteagudo thanked Councilwoman Fairclough, the City Council and Mayor Shelley for highlighting SAS’s good news. He emphasized, “I want the residents of Homestead to understand and to realize you have a premier, cream-of-the-crop school located here in this city. It is very important that we have these students remain here in Homestead and avail themselves of every single opportunity in this district. They do not have to leave the boundaries of Homestead to find a highly rated, quality education.”

He explained that beyond the school’s top ranking, collectively, students there have received $42 million in scholarships. At SAS, there is an impressive 100 percent graduation rate, with all of its students going on to four-year institutions of higher learning, including Ivy League universities. In addition, 100 percent of SAS students receive A.A. degrees from Miami Dade College.

Dr. Monteagudo said to the City Council, “We’re just so honored to have SAS across the street. Anytime you would like to visit, we would love you to do so,” he added. “What we need from you is to get word out to the residents of the community that you have a phenomenal school here. Make sure that you take advantage of it. The ‘Dream Factory’ is alive. Come realize your full dreams and potentials here.”
