Councilman Roth Recognizes Winners of the Community Relations Board’s Spring Student Essay Contest

Councilman Roth CRB Spring 2019 Essay Winners

Councilman Larry Roth announced the winners of the Community Relation Board’s (CRB) Spring Essay Contest during the May 29th Special Presentation. Essays submitted by students were judged by the Community Relations Board, which includes residents of Homestead and Florida City.

Councilman Roth said, “Since we had such a successful contest last time, we decided to make this a seasonal contest.”  He added, “This spring, we asked our students what changes they would like to see in their community.”

The three winners chosen were:

Ajay Evans, first place
Malaav Patel, second place
Aajayla Springle, third place

He invited the three winners to the front of the Council Chambers to be recognized. He first introduced third place winner Aajayla Springle, who also won an award in last fall’s contest. Councilman Roth explained that in her essay, Springle said that she wants to see more youth and student engagement in Homestead, including more hands-on learning opportunities like internships. Councilman Roth presented her with a Galaxy tablet.

Emphasizing the relevance of the topic raised by Sprinkle, Councilman Roth said, “We have students who are living and learning in our community who want to help us as leaders to improve our community. What better way to do that than spend some time with us, with the city staff — learning what city government is all about and how to participate in the community?”

Introducing second place winner Malaav Patel, Councilman Roth noted that in his essay, “Malaav expressed that he wants us to care more about wildlife in the city, including the manatees at Biscayne National Park and stray pets that are abandoned in the Redlands.” Congratulating him for paying attention to the welfare of local animals, Councilman Roth said, “Malaav also wants us to take care of the environment by walking and carpooling to help save energy.” Councilman Roth also presented him with a Galaxy tablet.

Introducing the first-place winner, Councilman Roth said, “Ajay Evans would like to see our cities help the less fortunate with more food drives and assistance.” Addressing Ajay directly he said, “That’s very commendable for you to realize there are people not only in our cities and the state, but all over the country that are much less fortunate than we are and to reach out to them and to lift their lives as well. That’s a very important lesson that you continue to pay it forward. You want to help others, you want to lift their lives as well.” Councilman Roth presented Ajay with a laptop computer.

The award-winning essayists were then joined by their parents for a photo with Councilman Roth.
