[ARCHIVED] Artists in the Spotlight: Susan Sorrentino, Carlos Franco and William C. Bunce

Shelley Artist Feb March

At the City Council’s Special Presentations on December 20th, Mayor Stephen Shelley introduced Susan Sorrentino, who, along with Carlos Franco and William C. Bunce, have been selected as Homestead’s Artists in the Spotlight for March 2019. Their group show, “People of Homestead,” is currently on exhibit at the Seminole Theatre.  An Artists’ Reception will be held on February 28 at 6:00 p.m. and refreshments will be served. The show will run through March 31.

The three artists, members of the Homestead Center of the Arts, have come together to show their work in a variety of media including, oils, acrylics, watercolor, ceramics and photography, inspired by the diversity of who the people of Homestead are. Sorrentino noted, “This is my first time I’m curating a show in my entire career and I’ve been an artist for 50 years.”

Explaining the work shown in “People of Homestead,” Sorrentino said, “It’s not only portraiture, but it’s who we are — how we’re so diverse. You can look around this room and see how diverse we are. It seemed logical to pull together this small group of artists to create this show for the community."

She continued, “William represents the veterans of our community, Carlos represents everyday people and then there’s me — I’m in the community and I wanted to do something to help the art community.”

Describing Carlos Franco’s work, Sorrentino explained, “He is an unbelievably realistic portrait painter. The portraits are huge, dramatic and beautiful. The faces are road maps of all the experiences these people have lived.” An award-winning artist who has exhibited widely, Franco is the director of art at the not-for-profit Children's Gallery at Cauley Square. Franco has an open studio where he paints daily and teaches classes. He studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Mercy College (New York City) and Miami Dade College.

Sorrentino, who met William C. Bunce at the South Florida National Parks Camera Club, said she “was floored when she saw his photographs of Vietnam veterans and invited him to be part of the show.” Bunce is an award-winning photographer and photographic artist who currently serves as the photographer at the Department of Veteran Affairs in Miami. Earlier, he worked as a photographer and visual information specialist for the federal government. Bunce received his BFA in photography from University of South Alabama.

Sorrentino, who was chosen as Artist in the Spotlight last year and showed her “Homestead Harvest” paintings in a show at the Seminole Theatre, retired in Homestead two years ago, after falling in love with the agricultural community. She works in a variety of media. She said, “My emphasis is more on who we are rather than what we look like. We are field workers. We are horse trainers. We are natives of the Everglades and even venture out into the black night to capture pythons!” An award-winning artist who has exhibited widely in galleries from New York City to Miami, Sorrentino traveled throughout the United States as an outdoor art festival artist for 30 years. Sorrentino received an AA degree from Miami Dade College and a BFA from the University of Florida.

Mayor Shelley concluded the presentation, saying, “Susan’s very involved in the art community and promoting art in the City of Homestead and our public places. I want to thank you for your commitment to our art community and enlightening us with the the opportunities for creative expression that exist. I would encourage everyone to see this show. It is a very beautiful and unique exhibit.”

If you are interested in becoming an “Artist in the Spotlight” or know of a local artist in the area from Broward, Dade or Monroe Counties, please contact Mayor Shelley’s office at 305/224-4433 or padgetj@cityofhomestead.com. Artists who live in or near the City of Homestead will be given preference.
