[ARCHIVED] Vice Mayor Shelley’s Artist in the Spotlight Looking for Local Artists

Vice Mayor Shelley Artist in the Spotlight December 2017

Homestead Vice Mayor Stephen R. Shelley is looking for local artists to participate in his Artist in the Spotlight program.  Participating artists will be able to display their artwork in the Seminole Theatre lobby for a period of two months and host an artist reception or workshop during that time.  Additionally, the artist will be recognized and given the opportunity to promote their artwork at a Homestead City Council Meeting.  The Artist in the Spotlight program is open to all types of artistic media and formats and to individuals, art clubs and schools.

Former participants of the program found the exposure to be invaluable. Featured artist for the months of June and July 2017 Norman Walters says, “I think Vice Mayor Shelley had a really good idea.  His innovative vision for his project at the renovated Seminole Theatre was a step in the evolution of Homestead and its habitants. Culture helps humanity live its hopes and dreams.”  Walters’ opening reception resulted in the sale of several works of art.

“The purpose of our Artist in the Spotlight program is to shine a light on our local artists and also give them a venue in which to promote themselves and hopefully sell their works,” says Vice Mayor Shelley, an avid photographer himself.  “I know how hard it can be to promote and market your work as an artist, and I wanted to create a program that would help our local artists while promoting art in general for the Homestead community.”

The Artist in the Spotlight program was created in 2010 by Vice Mayor Shelley to highlight the talents of local artists and allow them to showcase their artwork to the local community.  If you are interested in participating or know of a local artist in the area from Broward, Dade or Monroe Counties, please contact Councilman Shelley’s office at (305) 224-4447 or mwells@cityofhomestead.com.  Artists who live in or near the City of Homestead will be given preference.
