On Tuesday, January 15 from 5 to 7 pm, the MLK Pioneer Induction Ceremony will take place at the Phicol E. Williams Community Center, located at 951 SW 4th Street Homestead, FL 33030. Dozens of Homestead and Florida City residents will be honored because of their dedication to family, community and the ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Everyone is encouraged to attend the event and pay homage to these residents who have positively impacted the communities of Homestead and Florida City.
A free movie in the park event will take place on Friday, January 18 from 6 to 9 pm at the newly renovated Blakey Park, located at SW 6th Street, Homestead, FL. 33030. There will be free food and drinks for children and families who will enjoy “My friend Martin”, an animated film inspired by the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and picnic blankets to enjoy the movie at the park.
The 30th Annual MLK Parade and Festival in Homestead and Florida City, one of the largest MLK celebration in South Florida, will be held on Saturday, January 19. The parade starts at 12 noon on Lucy Street and NW 3rd Avenue and ends at 2pm at Loren Roberts Park; 627 Northwest 6th Avenue, Florida City, FL. 33034.The MLK Festival begins at the conclusion of the parade, WHERE, and will include the Miami Dolphins’ Junior Training Camp that will host the 2013 MLK punt, pass and kick competition for boys and girls, ages 6-15. All children must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian that can be accessed on site or online at www.dolphinsacademy.com. A host of festivities will also take place at the park.
On Sunday, January 20, the Gospel Fest at Loren Roberts Park will run from 3-7pm, followed by The 2013 MLK Chess Tournament on Monday, January 21 from 9am – 5pm at the Phicol Williams Community Center.
