[ARCHIVED] Aerial Mosquito Spraying Announced by Miami-Dade County

Mosquito Control

UPDATE: The planned spray was rescheduled due to adverse weather and will occur this evening, Friday, June 16, 2017 at 8PM, weather permitting.

Individuals with known allergic reactions should remain indoors. Beekeepers are asked to keep their bees covered during spraying operations in their particular area.

The Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste Management’s Mosquito Control and Habitat Management Division is planning an aerial adulticiding spray mission on Thursday evening, June 15, 2017, weather permitting. The aerial treatment is in response to mosquito surveillance data and a high volume of calls to 311 reporting nuisance mosquito activity.

The mosquito control flight will take place at approximately 8 p.m. until completed. The treatment area includes Homestead, Florida City, the Redlands, West Kendall, and areas east of U.S. 1 from S.W. 248th Street to the Rickenbacker Causeway, covering parts of Cutler Bay, Palmetto Bay, South Miami, Coral Gables, Pinecrest, and Miami. If weather conditions on the evening of June 15 require the cancellation of the scheduled flight, aerial spraying will take place on Friday, June 16 (weather permitting).

The insecticide applied during the spray mission is naled (Dibrom concentrate). Naled has been used safely by Miami-Dade Mosquito Control for decades, and is registered for use in the U.S. and in Florida by both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. As required by the EPA, Miami Dade County Mosquito Control Habitat and Management Division uses naled in accordance with label instructions, and it is only applied by a licensed professional.

Information about the aerial treatment will be distributed to the public via news release, posted on the Department’s and County’s website and communicated through social media. A reverse 311 phone call will be performed this evening and again on Thursday afternoon to advise residents within the spray area that aerial spraying will be performed.

Residents with questions about the aerial spraying, or complaints about mosquitoes, can visit www.miamidade.gov/mosquito or call the County’s contact center at 311.
