Committed to bringing attention to the successful magnet programs offered at local schools, Councilman Elvis R. Maldonado Chair of the Homestead Education Committee recognized Homestead Senior High School Practical Nursing and Health Science Magnet Academy at a special presentation during the November Homestead City Council Meeting.
“It is important that we let the community know what excellent programs are available to our students,” said Councilman Maldonado. “As a former career counselor I know the importance of programs like this one, and I want to congratulate these students for their hard work and dedication. This Practical Nursing Program is really helping students get ahead”
Homestead Senior High School Practical Nursing Program has been in existence for about 15 years and was the first approved secondary program of its type in Florida. It is currently the only two-year high school nursing program in Miami Dade County Public Schools that graduates high school seniors as board ready practical nurses. Last year the program also started offering additional certifications in nursing assistant, EKG aid, home health aide, and medical administrative assistant. “Our students are exceptional, they work and study very hard, and that is why we are the only program in Miami-Dade County that graduates our seniors as board ready practical nurses. After only three months of taking the test they are ready to go to work,” said Susan Starks Department Chair.
