[ARCHIVED] Homestead Honors the Military with Fifth Annual Military Appreciation Day

Downtown Homestead will host stunning military displays, an epic obstacle course competition, and an all day party with live music and food truck guaranteed to be fun for the whole family during the fifth annual Homestead Military Appreciation Day. The free event will bring together civilian families, service men and women from all branches of our military, and patriots of all ages on Saturday, May 7 from 3 pm to 8 pm in Losner Park (104 North Krome Avenue).

Dozens of food trucks and vendors will be situated along the picturesque streets of Downtown Homestead where a variety of military vehicles including boats, aircrafts, weaponry, and other interactive displays will be available to the public. Attendees will also enjoy a variety of live music and performances, a dramatic flyover by a team of F-16 Fighting Falcons during the opening ceremonies, a K-9 demonstration by the Homestead Police Department, and a children’s area with games and activities.

The real draw for this year's event is an obstacle course designed to showcase the strength of our military. Watch, as teams battle it out for a grand prize of $1200 and the gargantuan HARB Trophy! The course, designed and sponsored by BattleFrog and Bolt Fitness, will test strength and endurance as teams race head-to-head. After the competition, spectators who think they have what it takes will be able to give the course a try.

At the event, the Military Affairs Committee will be offering a $10 food voucher to active Military, reserve and veterans with a valid Military ID. The vouchers can be redeemed at the festival’s food trucks and various restaurants and retailers in the area.

Military Appreciation Day is the kick-off of Military Appreciation Month, in which all Homestead residents are encouraged to honor our military. In this spirit, the north side of the Seminole Theatre will be adorned with a 40 foot long American Flag for the entire month. Krome Avenue will also be decorated with flags and yellow ribbons to honor our service men and women and remind residents and visitors of their commitment to defending American freedom.

As part of Military Appreciation Month, the South Dade Chamber of Commerce is heading up the Military Business Discount Program. Participating businesses offer special discounts and deals to service members with a valid Military ID.

The event is a community effort organized by the City of Homestead along with the Homestead Reserve Air Base, the Military Affairs Committee, the South Dade Chamber of Commerce, and Homestead Main Street. For more information, visit www.cityofhomestead.com/military
