[ARCHIVED] Vice-Mayor Fairclough Honors Somerset City Arts Conservatory Academy Student Body President

Vice-Mayor Patricia Fairclough opened the December 16th Council meeting presentations by recognizing a remarkable student at Somerset City Arts Conservatory Academy in Homestead. Nelson Sobrino Jr., currently a 13 year old in the 6th grade, has come a long way since he was diagnosed with Autism in Kindergarten.

He has had an uphill battle to fit in, but with help and support from his family, friends, teachers, and school administrators, he has transformed from a very shy, introverted kid into a confident young man defying the odds. So much so, that he decided to run for student body president at his school, despite three other students running for the same office. His reason for running for office was, as he put it, “Because I care.” He won the election in a landslide.

“Nelson Sobrino is truly a remarkable young man and a real inspiration to all of us. Because of his tenacity and drive, he is achieving what many thought was not possible because of his autism,” stated Vice-Mayor Fairclough. She continued, “On behalf of the Mayor’s Youth Council and the City of Homestead and Council, we are so proud to present with this Certificate of Recognition for your hard work and accomplishments. We salute you!”

A little shy as he approached the podium, Nelson thanked everyone and was very honored and grateful of the recognition.
