[ARCHIVED] South Florida National Parks Camera Club Featured as Vice Mayor Shelley’s Artists in the Spotlight

South Florida boasts some of the most stunning natural landscapes in the country. It is these beautiful landscapes that inspired the birth of the South Florida National Parks Camera Club.

Vice Mayor Stephen Shelley, a member of the club and avid nature photographer, recognized the efforts and mission of the South Florida National Parks Club by awarding them the “Artist in the Spotlight” recognition for the month of July and August. Residents can enjoy the photography exhibit until the end of August at the William F. Dickinson Community Center.

The club began two years ago from the desire to explore and expose the natural beauty of South Florida’s national parks and landscapes. Founding Director Robert L. Chaplin spoke about the mission of the South Florida National Parks Camera Club. The group helps its members improve their photographic skills through education, and increase an appreciation for our national parks through the use of nature photography.

“The work of these artists is important for all of us living in South Florida as it serves as a reminder of the beautiful landscapes our National Parks have to offer,” said Vice Mayor Shelley. “As the Gateway to Everglades and Biscayne National Parks, Homestead is dedicated to giving our residents and visitors the encouragement to get out to nature and explore it. I’m honored to serve as a director for these talented artists and their mission.”

The club is a haven for photographers, from novice to experienced, to be around like minded people, and to learn, share, and grow, with a purpose of giving back and supporting South Florida’s National Parks. The artwork of the photographers depict the wildlife and adventurers that are seen throughout our National Parks. The members discover the beauty of our national parks through a variety of excursions throughout the year. The club welcomes anyone with a passion for photography. The membership isn’t limited to Florida residents as some members reside as far as Maine.

The Artist in the Spotlight program, which was created in 2010 by Vice Mayor Shelley, seeks to identify, nurture and empower local artists by giving them the opportunity to present their work to the general public. The works of will be displayed until the end of August at Homestead’s William F. Dickinson Community Center, located at 1601 N. Krome Avenue.

The South Florida National Parks Camera Club, Inc. meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month. Meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. and conclude at 9:00 p.m. and are held at the Villages of Homestead Clubhouse at 1851 S Canal Dr., Homestead, FL 33035 unless otherwise specified.
