The City of Homestead has joined Miami-Dade County and its municipalities in celebrating March as Bike305 month. All through the month, residents are encouraged to try cycling to work, school and other destinations, and various events are organized to promote bicycle use. Homestead contributed to the outreach with its own annual Biscayne-Everglades Greenway Bike Festival and a proclamation by Mayor Jeff Porter, officially declaring March as Bike305 Month in Homestead.
“I applaud the City of Homestead in their efforts to promote a healthier county. Homestead has been one of the most engaged communities we have worked with in the Bike305 program,” said Susan Kawalerski, Bike 305 coordinator for Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces and Vice President of Everglades Bicycle Club, who received the proclamation during March’s City Council meeting. “Initiatives such as the 6th annual Biscayne-Everglades Greenway Bike Fest are creating wonderful opportunities for people to get on a bike and enjoy it very much.”
Mayor Porter presented the proclamation on behalf of Councilwoman Judy Waldman, Chairwoman for Parks and Recreation, who spearheaded the Biscayne-Everglades Greenway Trail and helps organize the Biscayne-Everglades Greenway Bike Festival. This year’s Bike Festival took place on March 22nd at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. The festival brought together over 200 cyclists of all ages who enjoyed the chance to connect with nature while bringing awareness to the greenway project: a park-to-park Greenway loop which provides a scenic, non-motorized tour route, for walking, jogging, bicycling, skating, or simply enjoying the natural beauty of the environment.
Bike305 started 3 years ago by Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez to encourage residents to ride bikes for health, recreation and commuting. The City of Homestead joined other municipalities in this effort and has since become one of the most active in creating bike-friendly events and rides and becoming a great cycling environment for residents and visitors.
“Bike305 month in Homestead is yet another great way to revitalize our city and embrace and develop green initiatives” said Mayor Porter “but most importantly, our goal is to encourage families to connect to their community by bicycling and promote a healthier, more active lifestyle.”
