During the January Homestead City Council meeting, Councilman Elvis Maldonado honored Homestead Job Corps Center by presenting a proclamation by Mayor Jeff Porter that declared April 3, 2015 as Homestead Job Corps Center Day. For almost 20 years, Homestead Job Corps Center has provided free academic training—including courses in independent living, employability and social skills, reading, writing, and math curriculum to underserved young people from our community.
The Homestead Job Corps Center is an education and career technical training program, administered by the US Department of Labor, which helps people ages 16 to 24 improve the quality of their lives through career, technical, and academic training. The Job Corps program was created by the Lyndon B. Johnson administration in 1964 and the Homestead Job Corps Center was established in April of 1998. It offers technical training in career fields such as Carpentry, Computer Technicians, Culinary Arts, Home Health Care, Office Administration, Security and Protective Services in addition to their academic offerings.
“It is with great pleasure I recognize one of Homestead’s producers of young talent,” said Councilman Maldonado. “Homestead Job Corps Center is committed to the development and growth of our youth, to give them the skills they need to succeed in the job market. I applaud them for being part of creating a strong and successful Homestead.”
There to receive the honors were Lesly Diaz, Business and Community Liaison of Homestead Job Corps Center, and Kenneth Brown Jr., Student Government Association President and Culinary Arts student along with several other students of Homestead Job Corps. Center. Ms. Diaz expressed her gratitude and invited everyone in the community to take a tour of Homestead Job Corps Center to learn about all the training they have to offer.
