Mayor Jeff Porter and Councilwoman Patricia Fairclough Host National Day of Prayer

On May 1, 2014, the City of Homestead’s William F. Dickinson Community Center was the site of a large, inclusive gathering of religious leaders, city staff and members of the community as they celebrated the National Day of Prayer. The Nation’s theme for 2014 was One Voice, United in Prayer.

“Today’s wonderful showing and outpouring of good will was really inspiring for me and it re-affirmed the high character of so many in this community and I consider myself fortunate to be counted among them,” said Mayor Porter who hosted the event along with Councilwoman Fairclough.

The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. It is expected that in 2014, Millions will have observed the 63rd Anniversary of the National Day of Prayer.

“We have a very special, diverse and active citizenry here in Homestead and today’s turnout and the beautiful, inspiring words shared by visiting clergy, exemplifies that,” said Councilwoman Fairclough.

Present at the event were Pastor Elkin Espinal (Master of Ceremony), Evangelist Noel Batlle (Master of Ceremony), Pastor Luis Hernandez (Cristo es la Respuesta), Pastor Brock Shiffer (Speedway Community Church), Pastor Einsten Tamanta (Altar de Adoracion), Pastor Carlos Armenteros (Iglesia Bautista Manantial de Vida), Bishop Mack Allen (Full Gospel Tabernacle Assembly), Pastor Alexis Talbot (First United Methodist Church of Homestead), Bishop Chauncy Brown (Greater Williams Chapel Freewill Baptist Church and Ms. Nikki Alvarado.
