Councilman Burgess Honors Volunteers for November Food Drive

During a special presentation at the December City of Homestead Council Meeting, Councilman Jon Burgess awarded a number of certificates of appreciation to various community organizations who participated in a Homestead Thanksgiving food drive and distribution event.

Councilman Burgess began by acknowledging Start off Smart (S.O.S) for spearheading the effort. S.O.S is a program within the Homestead Police Department that seeks to identify at-risk children and families and to provide them with essential services through a unique approach that combines law enforcement principles with human services. Among the other recipients were Dena Roca, representing the Vice City Riders, a motorcycle club with a solid reputation for raising funds and resources for the underprivileged, and Amy Toll, a junior from South Dade High School and her mother and father, owners of El Santo Coyote Restaurant in Homestead.

“It was a great afternoon for many needy families,” said Councilman Burgess. “Through their hard work and dedication, hundreds of turkeys and other assorted food items made their way to the families that needed them most. I would also like to make a special mention to Amy and her family. I am truly heartened when I see a young person with so much passion for her community and the will to change it for the better.”
