Councilwoman Fairclough Leads Mayor’s Youth Council to Successful Chili Cook-Off Event

On the afternoon of December 14, 2013, the citizens of Homestead congregated upon Harris Field to celebrate all things chili at the Chili Cook-Off and Community Carnival. The event, which saw several local schools competing for top honors and the chance to raise money for their respective PTAs, was organized by the YMCA and the Mayor’s Youth Council under the stewardship of Councilwoman Patricia Fairclough. It proved to be a wonderful opportunity for the Youth Council members to roll up their sleeves and experience what it’s like to organize a community event and to coordinate fundraising efforts. The Youth Council delivered a job well done. Children’s carnival rides, cotton candy, food trucks, face painting, live entertainment and more were the order of the day and there was no shortage of smiles. Speaking proudly as the Youth Council’s mentor, Councilwoman Fairclough said,” These young people were handpicked because of their leadership, academic excellence and civic mindedness. We gave them a challenge, they rose to it, and I could not be happier for them. Can’t wait to see what the next event will bring!”

The winners were as follows: The $500.00 First Prize was awarded to Homestead Senior High and Gateway K8, the $250.00 Second Prize was awarded to West Homestead Elementary and First United Methodist Church and the $175.00 Third Prize was awarded to Miami Community Charter School. Also of special note was the $100.00 prize for Best Presentation that went to Miami Community Charter School, the $100 prize for Most School Spirit went to both the First United Methodist Christian School and Atala Montessori and the final $100.00 prize went to Miami Community Charter School for Community Choice.

Things are already shaping up for next year! On December 14, 2014, the theme will be a “Chili Cook-Off Affair with an International Flair” and the Grand Prize is $1000.00.
