Councilman Elvis Maldonado Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month at Special Council Presentation

As a commemorative gesture by Councilman Elvis Maldonado during Hispanic Heritage Month, two presentations were made by Hispanic students and faculty from Miami-Dade College’s Homestead Campus during a Special Council Presentation in October. The first to perform were two students from the college, clad in traditional folkloric garb, with an animated demonstration of a traditional Spanish dance. Afterwards, a professor from the college made his way to the dais to astound the crowd with his mathematics prowess. The professor, Cuban American Yusnier Viera, is known the world over as "The Human Calendar" for holding multiple World Records on calculating calendar dates. On October 31, 2005 he broke for first time the World Record for calendar calculations. At the Mental Calculation World Cup in 2006 he finished fourth place and sixth place in 2010, winning the calendar category in 2010. He currently has three World Records for calendar calculations. Viera has appeared in prestigious TV channels like CNN & ABC and has starred on the international Discovery Channel Series "Superhuman Showdown." In early 2014, he participated in the Latin American show "Super Cerebros", of NatGeo where he reached the final round of the show.

“Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America,” said Councilman Maldonado. “We are so fortunate here in Homestead to have such a dynamic, Hispanic diaspora surround us with their love of community and strong work ethic. The examples we saw here today from Miami-Dade’s Homestead campus is proof positive of that.”
